The 20th Annual Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition is pleased
to announce the
2014 "Oyster Award" Winners!
Seattle: Panels of top food and wine experts convened on April 8 at the WaterGrill in Los Angeles, April 9 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis and April 10 at Anthony's Homeport at Shilshole Bay in Seattle to select the 10 best West Coast wines to go with oysters on the half shell as the culmination of the month-long, three-tiered 20th annual Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition. The popular dating service for West Coast wines and oysters is sponsored by Taylor Shellfish Farms of Shelton WA and organized by competition founder, Jon Rowley, Jon Rowley & Associates of Seattle.
"Not many wines go with oysters", says Rowley, "but when one does, bingo!...it's a beautiful thing.”
Historically, the benchmark wines for oysters were French Muscadet and Chablis. The idea behind the Competition is to identify West Coast wines with similar oyster-friendly characteristics. West Coast wineries were invited to submit the crisp, clean-finishing white wines that best complement oysters on the half shell. California fielded 59 entries, Washington had 49 and Oregon 15.
The Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition is unique among wine competitions in that wines are judged by how they pair with a food. The judges first chew the oyster well so it goes to every part of the palate and then sip and score the wine, looking for a crisp wine that finishes clean and that exalts the oyster by not getting in the way of the next oyster.
Results from the three city judging are combined to determine the 10 equal 2014 Oyster Award winners. Oyster Awards are designed by Seattle artist Patricia Weyer.
With Oysters on the half shell currently one of the most dynamic dining trends, Oyster Award winners enjoy immediate sales benefits. "The search for the best wines to go with oysters adds to the excitement and culture of oysters", says Bill Taylor. "The acclaim by the wine and restaurant industries as well as the media, makes it fun for everyone."
Congratulations to the 2014 Oyster Award winners!
